What is a Work Permit

A work permit or work visa is an official document or stamp in a passport that demonstrates the immigration status of the holder of the work permit. By definition a work permit grants complete authorization for the individual to engage in full time employment in the issuing country. Generally a country’s government immigration department, ministry of labour and social affairs or the equivalent will be responsible to accepting and reviewing work permit applications and issuing the permits on approval.

A work permit is typically valid for an initial period of time (i.e. 2 years) and then it will need to be renewed. Once you have maintained a work permit for a certain period of time you may be exempt from requiring one.

Who needs a Work Permit or Residency Permit

In countries where there are no reciprocal agreements with your country of domicile you will typically be expected to obtain a work permit or residency visa in order to take up full time employment in a foreign country. However if you are an EU national you will not be expected to obtain a work permit to take up employment in another EU member state due to the legislations for free movement of workers.

If you intend to work for a period longer than 3 months in a country you will typically be expected to obtain a work permit. If you are visiting a country for a business related trip you will not be expected to seek a work permit.

If you are moving to a country where you have a job offer from an established company within an eligible vocation you will be available to apply for a work permit however certain types of jobs will not enable you to apply for a work permit.

If you are an EEA national you will not require a work permit to work within EU however all non-EEA citizens must obtain the relevant work permit prior to engaging in employment.
